Crystal Palace 4 Exeter City 2.

Miller, Risdon, and McCambridge replaced Lowton, Angus, and R. Ebdon in the City team which travelled to London to participate in the second round tie of the Southern Section Cup, against Crystal Palace, at Selhurst Park. The Palace included Birtley, their new capture from Coventry City, at outside right. There were two thousand spectators present at the start.

The Palace commenced with an attack on the right wing, but when Birtley's centre was headed on to Bigg that player was pulled up for fouling Gray. From the free kick McLean sent Hoyle away by means of a long an pass, well directed, and the City came very near to taking early lead. Hoyle, taking the ball in his stride, centred with good judgment, but his colleagues were not up, and the ball flashed across the goalmouth and out of play on the far side. Exeter took the lead after twenty five minutes, McCambridge kicking hard into the net following three remarkable saves by Dunn from Scott. Exeter's football at this stage was very good indeed, and their ground passing was superior to anything the Palace had done. Just before the interval, however, the home side equalised, a deceptive low shot by Bigg being missed by Chesters. Crystal Palace, encouraged by this success, developed a strong attack, and Chesters was busier in the few remaining minutes of the first half than in all the time previously.

Half-time:
Crystal Palace 1 Exeter City 1.

The City almost regained the lead when Dunn failed to clear a centre from Hurst, but Owens kicked away from the goal-line. A great shot by McCambridge was turned over the bar by Dunn for a corner, which was placed behind the net.

THREE QUICK GOALS TO THE PALACE.
Midway through the second half the Palace took the lead, Dawes controlling a through pass from Purdon and going on to score from eight yards' range. In the next minute Dawes headed in a third goal from Waldron's centre, and Birtley quickly followed with a fourth with a wonderful drive from outside the penalty area. Exeter were not as outplayed as the score suggested, and just before the finish Scott scored from McCambridge's pass.

SOUTHERN LEAGUE CUP REPLAY AT PLAINMOOR.

TORQUAY UNITED RESERVES 1
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.

Exeter City Reserves included Wynne Crompton, the new back, who was transferred to the Grecians from Crystal Palace on Monday. Crompton, who formerly played for Wrexham and Clapton Orient, is a former Welsh International, having represented his country in the matches against England, Ireland and Scotland in 1930-31. The City Reserves with the assistance of a strong wind were on the attack almost throughout the first half at Plainmoor, and took the lead through McArdle after 38 minutes. Exeter continued to be the superior team in the second half and their lead was increased by McCambridge from Scott's pass. Torquay were overrun, but re-shuffling their attack they broke away, and Flavell bundled Kirk and the ball into the net from a free-kick. Only fine goalkeeping by Langford prevented Exeter from scoring again. Crompton, the new Exeter back, played a strong and resourceful game throughout.
