Match 08
26th September 1936
Cardiff City v ECFC

Exeter and District League
Exeter City Reserves v Bideford

Saturday, September 26th.
CARDIFF CITY 3 EXETER CITY 1.

Thompson resumed at outside right for Exeter, having completely recovered from a pulled thigh muscle which kept him out of the side against Luton Town a week ago. The weather at Cardiff was dull and overcast, but there was no sign of rain, and more than 20,000 spectators were present when Tom Scott won the toss. Cardiff City are on the crest of a wave following a recent decline in their fortunes since being relegated from the Second Division at the end of the 1930-31 season. They are top of the League, Luton, who played Exeter last week, lying second. Nicholson, formerly of Bolton Wanderers, resumed at right half for Cardiff after missing last week's match through injury. Cardiff made the first breakaway, but Chesters easily gathered and cleared a centre from Ovenstone. Catching the ball, he withstood a challenge from Smith and then kicked to midfield. When Pinxton was dangerous on the Cardiff right wing Hobbs dashed across and kicked to touch, thereby putting paid to Pinxton's activity.

Cardiff City remain leaders of the Southern Section, but although they beat Exeter City by three goals to one at Ninian Park to-day they did not play like a promotion side. Cardiff deserved their victory, for they were faster on the ball, and their work was carried out with a snap and precision which was lacking in the Exeter team. Otherwise there was not a great deal to choose between the teams in a scrappy and disappointing game. Ovenstone, Talbot, and Smith scored for Cardiff and Clarke for the Grecians.

EXETER CITY 1 CARDIFF CITY 0. Southern Section Cup-tie.

Although the weather was fine there was only a handful of onlook ers at the start of Exeter City's Third Division Cup match with Cardiff City at St James's Park this afternoon. Both sides made several changes, and the teams lined up:

EXETER CITY
Tierney
Brown Boyle
Clarke Angus Shadwell
Keane Johnson Williams McGill Urmson

L.Ford Scott Nicholson Bassett Main Pugh Pinxton Walton
Talbot Ovenstone
Fielding
CARDIFF CITY

Cardiff kicked off from the railway end and launched two dangerous raids in the first minute. Walton, for whom Cardiff paid £1,000 to Bolton Wanderers yesterday for his transfer, was bundled off the ball as he was making speedy tracks goalwards, and then Tierney had to rush out of his goal to clear a well placed corner by Ovenstone.
LIVELY CARDIFF.
Continuing to show impressive form, the visitors were very lively on both wings, and their forwards generally were much cleverer and faster than Exeter's despite the temporary absence of Main, who had to go off with an eye injury. Johnson and Williams narrowly failed to meet the ball as it across from Keane, and McGill had a shot saved by Fielding. came Towards the interval much of Cardiff's early sparkle disappeared, and the balance of play now rested with Exeter. Angus, reintroduced at centre half, played an effective game, and in the forward line Keane was a tricky and dangerous winger. The only goal of the match was scored by Johnson for Exeter in the second half.
The attendance was in the region of 2,000.
