Match 17
2nd November 1935
Third Division
Notts County v Exeter City

Exeter and District League
Exeter City Reserves v St Marks

Saturday, November 2nd 1935.
NOTTS COUNTY 3
EXETER CITY 1.

The visit of Exeter City to the Notts County ground was their second. Their only previous appearance in the lace city was in 1931, when they were the one team that season to defeat Notts County at home. For the match this afternoon Exeter reinstated Lowton and Angus to the defence and intermediate line. The two amateurs, Ebdon and Hoyle, lost their places to McCambridge and McArthur. McLean captained the team and made a good start by winning the toss. The weather was fine and the ground conditions ideal for football, but in spite of this the attendance numbered no more than five thousand at the start.

EXETER CITY

After leading for three parts of the game Exeter lost at Notts today by 3 - 1. The result was scarcely a true reflex of a keenly fought game, for until the last quarter of an hour Exeter were the superior side. Bad luck dogged the City once again. They were a clever side until ten minutes before the finish, when Lowton put through his own goal to give the County the lead. After this Exeter lost heart. The forwards were at their best in the first half, when McLean was the "star" of the team and revealed some delightful and classical touches. Tom Scott was also a sound and constructive attacker. Robinson again played his defensive role well, and in fact there was nothing wrong with the defence until they failed against the storming Notts rally which took place in the final minutes. Exeter took the lead ten minutes before the interval when the Notts County Clarke sliced a clearance kick and McArthur took advantage of this to slip the ball through to McCambridge. The Irish International, with only Knox to beat, drew the 'keeper out and then crashed the ball into the back of the net for a very spectacular and well deserved goal. In the closing fifteen minutes Notts scored three times through Shaw, Lowton (own goal) and Notley. It was a tragic ending for Exeter.

  • FORMER CITY STAR TRANSFERRED
"Happy" Houghton, Exeter City's star inside-forward for close on six seasons, was yesterday transferred from Norwich City to Bristol Rovers. He turned out for his new club this afternoon against Brighton and Hove Albion and materially helped them to win by five goals to two. He scored one goal himself and made three others for Harris, formerly of Plymouth Argyle, who was also playing his first game for the Rovers.

CITY RESERVES v ST MARKS

With the "chiefs" away at Nottingham, the City Reserves played an Exeter and District League fixtures at St James's Park with St Marks this afternoon. Despite the bad weather there was a fairly large crowd.

Reserves:- Kirk; Brooking, Crompton; Haller, Bamsey, Barnes; J.Scott, Ebdon, Banks, Fantham, and Hoyle.

St Marks:- Taylor; Dunn, Andrews; F. Setter, Farrell, Blair; C.Setter, Radmore, Fry, Coombes, and Chudley.

Bamsey lost the toss and Exeter kicked off towards St. James's Road. Within five minutes they had taken the lead, A. Banks, the amateur centre-forward, scoring from a well judged pass through the middle by Bamsey. Shortly afterwards Scott hit the angle of the goal with a hard cross-shot after cleverly beating both the opposing backs. Close on time Ebdon scored Exeter's second goal after cleverly beating several defenders.
Result:-
Exeter City Reserves 2 St Marks 0.
