Match 09
3rd October 1936
Crystal Palace (h)

Southern League
Argyle Reserves (a)

Saturday, October 3rd.
EXETER CITY 3
CRYSTAL PALACE 2.

There was an unusual incident near the end of the City v Palace match at St James's Park this afternoon. One of the City players was penalised within the penalty area for dangerous play, and the referee awarded the Palace a free kick from inside the "box." This is a correct decision under the laws of the game, although it is very rarely put into operation.

After being twice in arrears Exeter City made a fine recovery and went on to win their third triumph in the current campaign. They started feebly, being always one kick behind the fleet footed Palace, for whom Liddle and Bigg were allowed too much latitude. Bigg and Waldron, however, spoiled much excellent approach work by over-eagerness when calmer methods were required.
PALACE TAKE THE LEAD.
Nevertheless, Crystal Palace took the lead after 27 minutes, when Liddle raced round Stimpson and passed to Birtley, whose powerful low shot found the net via the inside of the goalpost. Hereafter the superiority of the Palace was very marked, but they gradually shot their bolt. Exeter then began to have more of the play. Williams hit the bar and McGill's drive from the rebound was gathered by Dunn. Eight minutes before the interval Williams equalised, following a scramble in the Palace goalmouth.
Half-time 1 - 1.
Almost immediately after the restart Crystal Palace were again in front. A delightful triangular passing move between Liddle, Bigg, and Blackman left Bigg with an easy task, and he made no mistake with his shot into the roof of the net. From this point the City exerted themselves in no uncertain fashion, and despite all the heroism of Dunn (who had been injured just before the interval) they completely outplayed and overran their opponents. It was again Williams who put Exeter on terms when he got his head to a beautifully taken corner kick taken by C.Smith. Williams also had a large share in the last and winning goal. He beat Dawes for possession when that player appeared to have him covered. Dropping the ball at Scott's foot, the latter had merely to prod it into the net from three yards' range.

Southern League
ARGYLE RESERVES 2
CITY RESERVES 1.

J.Keane, with Exeter City on a month's trial from Kilmarnock, made his first appearance today, being at outside left for the Reserves against Plymouth Argyle Reserves in the Southern League match, at Home Park.

ARGYLE RESERVES Davies Milne m Kirkwood Robinson Hill Woods Goudie Preskett Melaniphy D.Smith Osman
CITY RESERVES Tierney Boyle Mellish
Young Bamsey Angus F.Smith Pollard Ebdon Pope Keane

Plymouth Argyle's forwards were soon on the move, and Tierney made a splendid save from Goudie. After ten minutes' play D. Smith scored for the Argyle, heading in from a corner by Osman. Keane in his first match was a dangerous raider, and along with Pope formed Exeter's better wing. Twenty minutes from the interval Osman was fouled and Hill made no mistake with the penalty kick. Midway through the second half Keane, who was Exeter City's best
forward, beat Davies with a grand rising shot. Ebdon should have scored but put the ball over the bar. The Argyle continued to hold the balance of play but Bamsey kept a very close watch on Melaniphy.
The attendance was 5,000.
