The reintroduction of Dunn, Risdon, and Charlie Miller to the Exeter team marked a welcome recovery. Miller was the best back afield, and it is hoped locally that so good and so popular a player will continue to receive the encouragement he so richly deserves. The winning goals, one in each half, fell to the "midget," Vic Hoyle, and Hurst. Both had special merit, though the one by Hurst provoked the greater enthusiasm. Hurst took the ball near the halfway line, dribbled past several defenders in that peculiar loping style of his, and finished the move with a crashing shot. It fairly "brought down the house." Though Cardiff, with a much-changed team, had a fair number of chances they failed to make use of them. Diamond showed a lot of dash and Gill was always dangerous when in possession, but with Miller keeping a watchful eye on him the Cardiff winger got very little rope. Robinson had another excellent match, and this young half-back improves with every game he plays. Risdon and Angus supported him well, and were in every way satisfactory, if not brilliant. Dunn and McLean were the prime schemere in the attack, while
the forceful and bustling methods of McCambridge against his former club were not to be taken lightly by Mort and company. Cardiff were well served in goal and at full-back but their attack failed at critical and opportune moments.
AT LONG LAST.
Exeter City have at long last won a League match. By defeating Cardiff by two clear goals the Grecians gained their first win in the competition since the opening day of the season, which was a long time ago. Today's triumph was fully deserved, although Exeter suffered a shaky period midway through the second half. Anything might have happened then, but just as the position was looking black Hurst broke away to score one of the finest and most spectacular goals ever seen at St James's Park. In doing so he placed the issue beyond doubt, for the City had already opened their scoring account in the first half.
Southern League
CHELTENHAM v CITY RESERVES.
Exeter City Reserves, who have yet to win a Southern League game this season, played their fifth match in this competition today at Cheltenham, and were beaten by two goals to one. Cheltenham attacked at the start, and Perkins had a chance to open the scoring but drove the ball over the crossbar. The game was fast, and some pretty combined play on both sides was witnessed. Cheltenham kept up their pressure, and Jones, receiving a long pass from Black, opened their scoring account in 25 minutes. Scott and McArdle both shot wide for the Grecians, but shortly before half-time Ebdon levelled the scores. Bowles saved finely from Ebdon at the start of the second half, and for some time the game veered round in the City's favour. This did not last, however, and with Cheltenham attacking in full force Black scored their second goal.
