Match 11
17th October 1936
Gillingham (h)
Southern League
Guildford (a)
Saturday, October 17th.
EXETER CITY 1 GILLINGHAM 1.
Play in this match at St James's Park was dull, with Exeter City the better of two moderate sides until ten or fifteen minutes from half-time. Then the Gillingham forwards caught the City defence on the wrong foot, and following a clever move between Wheeler and Watson the latter beat Chesters from close range. Exeter equalised almost immediately, Scott driving the ball past Whitelaw after Keane had beaten the defence and put Scott in a favourable position.

The "Hoppers" improved considerably in the second half, and were unlucky not to score on several occasions. Exeter City's team was weakened, however, by the enforced absence of Bamsey, who had to leave the field through injury. Scott took his place at centre half. Play was extremely poor and ragged towards the end, but Gillingham were the more dangerous side, Brown and Boyle having to resort to kicking to touch to keep their forwards out.
