Match 19
16th November 1935
Southern League
Clapton Orient v Exeter City

Exeter and District League
Exeter City Reserves v Dawlish

Saturday, November 16th 1935.
CLAPTON ORIENT 1
EXETER CITY 2.

After a fine morning the weather came in very wet, and there was a heavy downpour just before the kick-off. The playing pitch at Lea Bridge Road, never a footballers' paradise, was in a terrible state this afternoon, and a keen nip in the air added to the discomfort of the players and spectators. Owing to the Orient's colours being red and white Exeter wore white shirts. McLean won the toss, but the Orient, kicking off, were at once dangerous, and Chesters had to dash out to clear a centre by McAleer.

Clapton Orient came a cropper for the first time this season. It was a most unexpected happening at Lea Bridge Road, as it was the lowly Exeter City, bottom of the League, that did the trick. The Grecians, who won by the odd goal in three, fully deserved their success. From the start the winners seldom tried to play clever football on a sodden pitch but preferred to swing the ball about from wing to wing. Had Clapton Orient displayed similar tactics it might have been a different story, as Exeter were defending for long periods. Instead the Orient tried to play close football, which suited Exeter's sturdy defence. Affleck was not nearly so prominent as he usually is for the Orient, McCambridge proving a very troublesome opponent, while Searle and Herod did not kick with their usual accuracy. The crowd of seven thousand spectators saw the Orient goal fall for the first time this season when McCambridge got the ball past Hillam in the twenty-fifth minute, but Miller unluckily turned the ball into his own goal from Smith's centre to put the Londoners on level terms. McLean restored Exeter's lead, beating Hillam all the way with a wonderful left-foot shot from 25 yards. Exeter were wisely keeping the ball moving, and by changing the point of attack at every possible opportunity were adopting the correct tactics. Just before the interval there was one of the most peculiar refereeing decisions imaginable. The Orient had been awarded a free kick, and when the ball had been lobbed forward Mr Mills blew his whistle and gave Clapton Orient a penalty. Farrell took the kick but drove the ball straight at Chesters, who saved. It was poetic justice, for the penalty should never have been awarded. The Orient did the majority of the attacking in the second half, but Gray and Miller rose to the occasion and easily held up the home forwards.

DAWLISH 2.

Dawlish, who are one of the oldest football clubs in Devon, are making great strides this season in the Exeter League, and they fielded a strong side at St James's Park this afternoon.

Exeter: Kirk; J.Mallett, Crompton; S.Haller, Bamsey, E. Tappin; L. Brooking, S.N.Pope, McArdle, McArthur, H.May.
Dawlish:- G.Trott; H. Cann, F.Tapp; W.Slee, W. Westcott, A. Drew; F.Newman, A. Leaman, T.Bluck, F.Harvey, R.Taylor.

Bluck opened the scoring after ten minutes, meeting a beautiful centre from Newman first-time and driving the ball past Kirk. Strong tackling by Cann and Tapp broke down several City attacks and within the space of ten minutes Dawlish scored again, this time through Leaman. By half-time, however, the City had drawn level, McArthur and Pope scoring. The feature of the second half was the scoring of four goals by McArdle, who was operating at centre-forward for the first time.
