Match 14

Southend United (h)
Exeter and District League
U.C.S.W (a)
Saturday, October 31st.
EXETER CITY 2
SOUTHEND UNITED 2.
The start of today's match at St James's Park was sensational. In the first minute Southend were dangerous with Bird and Bolan two penetrative wingers, and following a remarkable tussle in the City goalmouth and a misunderstanding between Brown and Boyle the ball was sent into the net by Lane. Gradually, however, the Grecians began to hit back, and while not approaching the fine football standard of their opponents, forced an equalising goal, Williams scoring off the upright from Scott's deft pass. Williams nearly put the City ahead just after the interval with a fast shot all slong the carpet which Mackenzie diverted round the post in the nick of time. A sudden breakaway down the wing by Bolan brought Southend another goal. Chesters came out too far, and when the ball was centred all Goddard had to do was to kick it into the empty net. The City's second equaliser came in an unexpected manner. After a long series of attacks when the ball went everywhere except into the net a free kick was awarded 30 yards from the Southend goal. Clarke took this, and had the satisfaction of seeing his shot curl into the top corner of the net with Mackenzie making hardly any effort to save it.

Clarke, Angus, Shadwell; Keane, Johnson, Williams, Scott, McGill.
Southend: Mackenzie; Nelson, Everest; Deacon, Turner, Carr; Bolan, Lane, Goddard, Dickinson, Bird.
