Match 20
23rd November 1935
Third Division
Exeter City v Southend United

Southern League
Bath City v Exeter City Reserves

Saturday, November 23rd 1935.
EXETER CITY 1
SOUTHEND UNITED 0.

Though Exeter City won their third successive League match it was a close call against Southend at St James's Park today. Only one goal was scored, and McCambridge got it in the second half, but most of the good football was played by Southend. Though the weather was bright and dry there was no improvement in the attendance, barely 5,000 being present when the visitors won the toss. They unexpectedly decided to face the breeze and sun in the first half.

Maintaining their recently improved form, Exeter City won for the third time running, and with better finishing the margin of their success would have been greater. At the outset Southend had to withstand a vigorous onslaught, in which Mackenzie was obviously troubled in having to face a slanting sun. That he came through unscathed was distinctly to his credit. His safe fielding of hot shots from McCambridge and McLean in the opening minutes surmounted difficulties which in the later stages of the game tended to increase. Scott's liveliness on the right wing was a leading factor in Exeter City's aggressiveness, but nothing resulted, and a raid engineered by Lane and Oswald had the City defence extended to the full. Stevens, who was a colleague of Jimmy Dunn at Everton, lifted the ball over the bar when he had the goal at his mercy, while Miller alone stood between Lane and his objective with Chesters out of his goal and on the ground after saving from Stevens. In the later stages of the first half Southend attacked with great frequency on their right wing, but the support of the inside forwards was largely discounted by the solid defence put up by Gray and Miller, with Risdon and Angus also doing their share. Immediately after the resumption Dunn cleverly lured Robinson away before sending a beautiful pass to Scott. Scott's centre provided McCambridge with an open goal, which he missed. Exeter's assertiveness was not to be denied, however, and when Scott rounded Robinson (Southend) and passed to McCambridge the Irishman with a long daisy-cutter scored the only goal of the game. McLean nearly followed his example from the restart, and for a period it was all Exeter. Southend rallied towards the end, Lane and Bolan being unlucky with praiseworthy attempts to score, and just before the final whistle Chesters saved miraculously from Stevens.

Southern League
BATH CITY v
EXETER CITY RESERVES.

Exeter City Reserves played dazzling football this afternoon in the Southern League match at Bath. The referee (Mr Croft) had to speak to a number of players on account of too energetic play.
There were thrills in both goalmouths, and Bath City possibly had slightly the better of the game. Exeter showed plenty of initiative, and the combination between the halves and forwards was good. They opened the scoring just before the interval, McArdle netting from Hoyle's pass. Bath resumed in the second half without their goalkeeper, who was suffering from slight concussion after being bustled by the Exeter forwards in the first half, and to add to their troubles Smith was then injured and had to go on the left wing. After twelve minutes, however, Weaver equalised. Five minutes from "time" the referee awarded Bath a penalty for a foul, and Richards scored with the kick. Exeter fought back in splendid fashion and Ebdon equalised. It was a bustling game, fought out at great pace, and the 2,000 spectators were given plenty of thrilling incidents.
