Exeter City Reserves v Barry

Saturday, December 7th 1935.
EXETER CITY 1
CRYSTAL PALACE 0.

The Palace, victors over Exeter City earlier in the season in the Southern Section Cup and fortuitous conquerors of Bristol City in the English Cup, took the opportunity of introducing Levene, signed by them from the 'Spurs last week. He played in the place of W. Smith, at left half. Another alteration was at outside left, where Hanson was preferred to Bigg. Exeter had T.Scott at inside right and Dick Ebdon, the Ottery St Mary amateur, at centre forward. There were less than three thousand spectators at the start.

Within ten minutes of the start Ebdon scored for the City, and it was the only goal of the match. The City after their dismal display of last Saturday were "top dogs" for most of the game today. Against a defence that was very uncertain under pressure they had many opportunities, and should have won by a much more decisive margin. The approach work was very good, but when within striking range the forwards revealed their habitual weakness. Shots went everywhere except on target, and those that were on the mark gave Dunn (Crystal Palace) little difficulty. Hurst and Tom Scott were particularly at fault, each missing a "sitter" before the interval. On the other hand Blackman with a better directed effort might well have equalised Ebdon's early goal. The City in the second half continued to hold a distinct territorial advantage until fifteen minutes from the finish, when Gray injured his knee and was more or less a "passenger." The Palace profited by Exeter's handicap, and carried out three or four threatening raids during the closing stages. Chesters made two brilliant saves, one each from Waldron and Blackman.

EBDON PUTS SOME LIFE INTO THE CITY ATTACK.

Showing improved attacking form in the first half, and great stability throughout, Exeter City returned to winning ways. Dick Ebdon, newly promoted to the side, scored the goal which gave the Grecians the points. He was a dashing and enterprising leader and certainly infused some life into the forward line. He was a tireless worker, and along with Hurst carried off the attacking honours in the Exeter side. Another Exeter player to shine was Angus, whose defensive work was strong and well-timed, and whose distribution of the ball was excellent.

BRISTOL ROVERS RESERVES v
EXETER CITY RESERVES.

Exeter City Reserves had three internationals in their team at Eastville today against the Rovers in a Southern League match. In the early stages Exeter were kept on the defensive, and an easy scoring chance fell to the Rovers when Risdon failed to clear, Harris netting from close range. After thirty minutes Exeter equalised with a picture goal, and this was very popular, McCambridge being the scorer against his old club. McArthur outwitted two opponents and centred the ball to McCambridge, who sprang up and headed it into the top of the net well out of the reach of Robertson. Warren resotred the lead to the Rovers with an equally splendid goal, a beautiful cross-shot that flew into the net with Kirk having no chance. Three minutes after the interval Bristol went further ahead, a shot by Crisp beating Kirk. Exeter's best efforts in this half were a grounder by Bamsey and a header by McCambridge. Bristol won by three goals to one.

Exeter City Reserves were represented by:- Kirk, Crompton, and Tappin; Risdon, Bamsey, and Fantham, Hoyle, Dunn, McCambridge, McArthur, and Pope.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 2 BARRY 0.

Knocked out of the Cup in the first round by Gillingham two weeks ago, Exeter City chiefs were without a match today, when the second round ties were played off. The Reserves were at home to Barry in a Southern League match, and the crowd, numbering 2,000, had a disappointment in store when it was known that Fred Whitlow, who holds the Exeter City individual goalscoring record, was unable to turn out for the visitors on account of an injury received last Monday.

Exeter's attacks were repulsed by a keen defence with Pulling playing a prominent part. Dunn headed just wide from a corner, well placed by Hoyle. Kirk advanced from his goal to make a thrilling clearance from Perks, who had received from Paget and cut in towards goal. The City enjoyed the greater territorial advantage, but chances of scoring were squandered by the forwards. - Kirk was beaten by a shot from Evans shortly after half time, but the ball rebounded from the face of the crossbar. At length the City got going. Bamsey began the move by passing to Hurst, who, beating J.Jones on the run centred for Hoyle to score with a grand cross-shot from outside the penalty area. Incessant pressure by Exeter was not rewarded till the closing minute, when Lewis, hustled by McArdle and Hoyle, put the ball into his own net. Result: City Reserves 2 Barry 0.
