Match 21
12th December 1936
FA Cup 2nd Round
Walthamstow Athletic v ECFC

Southern League
Cheltenham v Exeter City Reserves

Saturday, December 12th.

FOG, FROST, AND SNOW DISORGANISE FOOTBALL. CITY'S CUP TIE CUT SHORT IN 65TH MINUTE.

Walthamstow Avenue 1
Exeter City 1: F.A.Cup.
MATCH ABANDONED.

Fog, frost and snow, football's biggest enemies, joined forces to upset one of the most important programmes in the Winter Sporting Calendar. Curiously, while four League matches, and two Rugby Union County Championship matches were postponed owing to the weather, the only F. A. Cup Second Round Tie which did not go its allotted span was that between Walthamstow and Exeter at Walthamstow. The referee, after previously consulting his linesmen regarding the advisability of continuing, applied the closure after 20 minutes of second half play, with the score at 11, and with Exeter on top, after early uncertainty against a very fine amateur combination.

EXETER CITY

Walthamstow Avenue and Exeter City are still in the Cup after 65 minutes of silhouette football at Green Pond Lane. The fog which shrouded the ground became so thick that the game had to be put a stop to and abandoned after each side had scored one goal. From what could be seen of the play it appeared that the amateurs were the better combination. Collins and Magner were an excellent right-wing pair, while the dribbling of Davis often had the City defence in trouble. The Avenue did most of the pressing during the first half, and although Tierney, due to the poor visibility, was lacking in confidence, he brought off several smart saves. It was not possible to judge the effectiveness of Exeter's forwards because they did not take play into the Walthamstow territory very often. The Avenue went ahead after 15 minutes, when Lewis headed a fine goal from a centre by Collins. Five minutes before half-time, when it became difficult to judge what happened, the City were awarded a penalty. Clark took the kick and scored.

It was impossible to see both goals when the game was restarted in  the second half. Exeter were on top in this half with the Avenue tiring. A shot by Urmson flashed just over the top of the crossbar, then, after the referee had consulted the linesmen he stopped the game.

The official attendance, a record for the ground, was 11,131, and the receipts £500. Replay on Thursday.
