Match 27
4th January 1936
Third Division
Exeter City v Swindon Town

And
Ilfracombe v Exeter City Reserves

Saturday, January 4th 1936.
EXETER CITY 0
SWINDON TOWN 3.

It would be difficult to find a worse team than Exeter City in the whole of the Football League on this afternoon's showing. They were not only beaten by Swindon Town, but quite outclassed in every department. And Swindon are not a brilliant side. The score does not overemphasise Exeter's inferiority. Slowness was the chief of the home side's many faults. Lack of craft, enterprise, and understanding were others. Neither was there any method shown, and Miller was the only member of the team to come through with any measure of distinction. Miller in fact deserved to be in a better team than Exeter were to-day. Had his colleagues done as well there would have been a happier story to tell. Chesters was unsure of himself, especially after the interval, and Crompton was not fast enough. As spoilers the City half backs were ineffective, and any ideas they may have had regarding constructive work were no better. The attack was innocuous; a muddling vanguard in midfield, and possessing scant notions of finishing ability near goal. It was Exeter's first home defeat in the League since October, and it will be the forerunner of many more unless a rapid improvement is manifested. Swindon's goals were obtained by Lowry after five minutes, and by Fowler and Wilcockson in the second half.

Exeter City:- Chesters; Crompton, Miller; Clarke, Robinson, Angus; J.Scott, T.Scott, Ebdon, McLean, Hurst.

Swindon:- Beecham; Shanks; Fowler, Bowl, Duckworth, Smith; Cousins, Armstrong, Lowry, Wilcoskson, Wells.

ILFRACOMBE v CITY RESERVES.

Risdon opened the scoring from the penalty spot, after Parker had handled in attempting to clear. Towards the interval Risdon took advantage of the slowness of Matthews and banged the ball into the net for Exeter's second goal.

Ley reduced Ilfracombe's arrears shortly after the start of the second half, but McArthur restored the two goals margin, and a fourth was added by Bamsey. The scoring was completed by Bromell for Ilfracombe.
Result:-
Ilfracombe 2 City Reserves 4.
