Two thousand spectators saw Exeter kick off from the big bank end and straightaway attack the Northampton goal. The City kept the ball moving freely on the wet turf and raided on both wings. Five minutes from the start Williams opened the scoring with a shot to the far corner of the net from a through pass by Scott. Exeter's early supremacy did not last, however, and Northampton drew level in ten minutes, Lauderdale firing the ball home after Brown had headed Allen's shot out from under the crossbar. Exeter were slow in tackling and their play was nothing like their form in the Cup-tie. They were frequently outpaced by Northampton, and after 29 minutes Chesters misjudged a free kick by Simpson, and dropped the ball which Allen promptly drove into the net. Further goals were scored in the first half by Lauderdale after 33 minutes and Rawlings after 40. Just on half-time Scott drove wide of an open goal. Crossing over with a lead of four goals to one Northampton were playing with all the confidence imaginable against a leg-weary team, and Rawlings headed the fifth goal. Williams then scored Exeter's second.
