Match 37
14th March 1936
Third Division
Luton Town v Exeter City

Southern League
Exeter City Reserves v Bristol Rovers Reserves

Saturday, March 14th 1936.
LUTON TOWN 3 EXETER CITY 1.

Though they were beaten by three goals to one at Luton today, Exeter City did not deserve to lose by such a margin. The League leaders were in fact lucky to gain encouragement by scoring a third goal just at a time when Exeter were making a determined attempt to equalise. Although Luton were on top for most of the first half the City were the better side after the interval. It was a clean game and Exeter were plucky losers. The Luton sharpshooter, Jack Ball, who has had First Division experience with Manchester United, Sheffield Wednesday, and Huddersfield, was kept in close check by Robinson, but the best half-back on the field was Nelson, of Luton.

Luton Town included Rich, signed a fortnight ago from Plymouth Argyle, at outside-right, it being his third game for the Strawplaiters. The weather and ground conditions were perfect, and there was every prospect of a big gate when the crowd commenced to roll along an hour before the kick-off. Spectators continued to drrive steadily, and there were about 12,000 when the match started. Miller lost the toss, and it was some minutes before either of the sides could make headway. Luton must have been glad that they included Rich, the former Argyle winger, in their attack, for he maintained the promise shown in his first two games for his new club, against Watford and Bristol City, and what is more, in this match, he scored two of Luton's three goals. Although these goals were rather in the nature of gifts, he was always on the spot, which is more than can be said for either Martin, Ball, or Roberts. Ball was in fact so well held by Robinson that he received no scoring chances worthy of the name, and very little was seen of him in an attacking role. Stephenson made the opening for Rich's first goal and scored the second one himself from a pass by Ball, and by these two goals Luton led at half-time. For some time after the interval Exeter threatened to recover their position, and Jack Scott scored a neat goal. Then, with Exeter having much the better of the exchanges, Luton broke away on the left and another fine centre by Stephenson was headed into the net by Rich from close range.

match at St James's Park. Pretty passing by the Bristol forwards had the Exeter goal in peril, and in the very first minute a shot from Harris struck the wrong side of the net and a moment later L.Golledge was just wide.

City Reserves. Kirk; Risdon and Lowton; S.Haller, Bamsey, and Fantham; McArthur, S. Pope, Ebdon, McLean, McArdle.
Rovers Reserves. Robertson; Smith and R.Golledge; S.Seward, McArthur, Donald; Barley, Rose, Harris, L. Golledge, and Harwood.
Referee: Mr W.A.Moyse.

A shot at goal by Ebdon was blocked by Robertson, but McArdle followed up to score. Harris levelled matters and Harwood gave Bristol the lead. McArdle headed the ball into the Bristol net only to have the goal disallowed for a handling infringement, then Harris beat Kirk for the Rovers' third goal. Bristol had established themselves in the first half as much the smarter side, and after ten minutes of play in the second period Harris scored again. Exeter then rallied, and goals by Lowton with a penalty and Ebdon produced a thrilling finish.
