Match 40
28th March 1936
Southend United (a)
Saturday, March 28th 1936.
CITY DON'T LAST: AND ARE! SOUTHEND SCORE 3 GOALS IN SECOND HALF. BEBY WORKS HARD IN VAIN.
Southend United 4 Exeter City 0.
Exeter City's performance at Southend today was in keeping. with many other inept exhibitions by them this season. Once again the City failed hopelessly after the interval. It was in this period that Southend scored three of the four goals by which they won. Beby was a grand goalkeeper, who worked hard all in vain, whilst Gray was the better full-back. The defeat of Exeter City today established a club record of an unenviable nature; sixteen League games without a win.

EXETER CITY
Southend United were generally on the offensive in the first half, yet lost many scoring chances against defenders who made frequent mistakes. The crowd were served up with thrills in plenty, and Beby was almost continuously in action in Exeter's goal. Bolan scored for Southend after thirty minutes following a bad mistake by Miller. Exeter scarcely raised an attack after the interval. Gray and Miller were almost run off their legs, and had it not been for a magnificent display of goalkeeping by Beby the "Shrimpers" would have set up a record score for a League match. Bolan, Firth, and Goddard scored for Southend in the second.
