CITY BREAK THE SPELL: FIRST WIN THIS YEAR. BUT SHAKY AFTER THE INTERVAL AND COBBLERS FINISHING POOR.
Exeter City 3 Northampton Town 1.
Compared with the sides which drew at Northampton in January both the City and the Cobblers differed in every department. Five Exeter players, namely Kirk, Crompton, Miller, Robinson, and Dunn, who took part in the earlier match were not playing today, while Northampton made even more changes, with Thomson, Dawes, Riches, Hobbs, Robson, and Lyman of the January eleven absent today. Five of the Cobblers' team which came to Exeter to day were signed by Mr Jack English, namely McMenemy, Tolland, Potter, Bell, and Brown.
The rain of the morning eased off at two o'clock but the weather turned much colder. The crowd at the start numbered 2,000, the smallest Saturday gate for many years.

NORTHAMPTON TOWN
There was quite a sensation at St James's Park this afternoon, for Exeter City won a match. The Grecians beat Northampton by three goals to one, but they had to fight very hard for their first victory of the year. Indeed, the Cobblers repeatedly looked like saving one, if not both points until a quarter of an hour from the finish, when a goal by McCambridge put the issue beyond doubt. Exeter opened well and scored in the first five minutes, but their old fault of inability to maintain the pace was again in evidence after the interval. Beby played his usual sound game in goal, and Gray was the better back, but the halves were not impressive. Bamsey was too slow, and the wing halves failed to carry out their defensive duties effectively. In the attack Hurst and McCambridge were prominent. Hurst was too speedy for the left flank of the Cobblers' defence and he should have received more of the ball than he did. McCambridge's performance can be summed up in two words; dash and whole-heartedness. Northampton were the more polished but their midfield play was far superior to their finishing. Their defence, except Mackie, who like McCambridge is an Irish International, was poor. McCambridge opened the score for Exeter after five minutes, and seven minutes later Tom Scott scored the second goal. Northampton improved with the wind behind them in half, and Brown scored after seven minutes. the second
PLAYERS REBUKED.
During one of the many Northampton sallies in the second half Brown was charged over by Lowton, and Brown aimed a kick at the City captain. This prompted Beby to rush out of his goal and remonstrate with Brown, and both players were engaged in an aggressive attitude when the referee stopped the game to call them over to him and administer a rebuke. Exeter's third goal was scored by McCambridge from a centre by Hurst, who had cut through the Cobblers' defence after getting a long pass from T.Scott.

EXMOUTH TOWN v CITY RESERVES.
Exeter City Reserves met Exmouth Town for the first time in an Exeter and District League match, and the prospects of a keen game attracted a large crowd to the seafront ground.
Exmouth:- C.Pope; L. Roskelly, G. Pedrick; J.Miller, A.Lavis, S.G. Cooke; J. Pope, F. Berry, W.J. Wakeham, I.Norton, A. Flood.

Good Friday, April 10th 1936. FRIERNHAY v EXETER CITY RESERVES.
In this Exeter and District League match, played by arrangement at St James's Park, Friernhay gave the City Reserves a very good game, and were rather unlucky to lose by the odd goal.
Friernhay: Godbeer; Penn, Liddle; Johnson, Allison, Radford; Palfrey, Thorn, Burrows, Crees, Erredge.
City: Brooking; Risdon, Spiller; McArthur, Robinson, Barnes; Hoyle, Pope, Smith, McLean, McArdle.
Fielding a side that included six amateurs, the City were in arrears at the interval, Allison and Erredge having scored for Friernhay, Smith replying for the City. Exchanges were extremely keen in the second half, and tiring a little the Friars conceded two goals, both obtained by Smith, who thus completed his "hat-trick."
Result:-
Exeter City Reserves 3 Friernhay 2.
