Match 34
6th February 1937
Crystal Palace (a)
Southern League
Barry (h)
Saturday, February 6th.
CRYSTAL PALACE 8
EXETER CITY 0.
Exeter City's Record Defeat of All Time.
Crystal Palace provided a check at Selhurst Park to Exeter City, last week's sensational Cup "giant killers", by scoring a total of eight goals, and so gaining their best victory of the season. In fact it was their biggest victory in first-class football. It was also Exeter's heaviest defeat of all time. They were beaten a long time ago by Merthyr Town by 7 to 1, and have also lost to the Palace in earlier years by 7-2 at Selhurst and 6-0 at Exeter, but never before have they had eight goals scored against them in any professional match.

EXETER CITY
The ground was partly covered with frost and a strong and blustery wind blew from goal to goal. Exeter City seemed to expend all their energy in the first quarter of an hour. Angus won the toss, and assisted by the wind they went straight into the attack and stormed the Palace goal, and Williams was unlucky to have a fine hard shot rebound from the post. The whole course of the game turned when Crystal Palace were given a penalty from which Birtley scored their first goal. From a struggling side the Palace became a brilliant combination. Walker, a former Scottish International of St Mirren and Notts County fame, tall and commanding, stood out in their defence, and Palethorpe, Sheffield Wednesday's centre forward in the 1935 Cup Final at Wembley, who played today at inside left, showed all his class in masterly ball control and skilful passing. Both Blackman and Bigg thrived on Palethorpe's scheming, and some time before the interval Blackman twice and Watson once had driven the ball past Chesters, the three goals coming in the space of just under ten minutes. Bigg, who played a fine game at outside left, kicked three goals in the second half. He also provided the centre from which Watson, his opposite winger, headed the Palace's eighth goal.
The Exeter City forwards received few opportunities, but F. Smith and Owen were fast and clever on several occasions and Williams was a lively and rather unlucky leader.
