Match 44
18th April 1936
Third Division
ECFC v Notts County

Exeter and District League
Budleigh Salterton v Exeter City Reserves

Southern League
Newport County Res. v Exeter City Res.

Saturday, April 18th 1936.
EXETER CITY V NOTTS COUNTY.

For the third time in succession Exeter City figured in a drawn match, today. They failed to score against Notts County in the last home match of the season, and in fact hardly one decent scoring chance was made by either side, and the defences had the measure of the situation nine times out of ten. Exeter City's attack was erratic and disjointed. Notts County were no better when it came to attacking moves, and there was an almost entire absence of constructive play.

City: Beby; Risdon, Lowton; Clarke, Bamsey, Angus; Hurst, Ebdon, McCambridge, T.Scott, J.Scott.
Notts:- Blyth; Mills, Feebury; Lawrence, Walker, Meads; Steele, Rickards, Notley, Shaw, Fallon.
Referee:- Mr E. C. Mills.

It was an encounter which told all too plainly of the season's fast approaching end, and there was hardly anything to enthuse over. Granted the conditions were not easy. A light ball on a bumpy ground was not helpful to good football, but even taking that into account something better was expected from two Football League teams.

Exeter and District League
BUDLEIGH SALTERTON
v CITY RESERVES.

In an Exeter and District League match at Budleigh Salterton this afternoon Exeter fielded their full permitted quota of five professionals. Budleigh were without Fred Jasper, who formerly played for the Grecians, but Courtney, another ex Grecian, turned out for them. Annis saved a hot shot from Barnes, and then stopped a rain of shots which were sent at him from all angles, and he was well supported in defence by S.Easton and M.Keslake. Robinson headed a goal for Exeter from a corner kick, taken by Sutherley. When Exeter were awarded a penalty in the second half Dunn took the kick but put it straight into the hands of Annis.

City Reserves:- Kirk; Crompton and Miller; S.Haller, Robinson, and S. Barnes; V.Hoyle, S. Pope, C. Smith, Dunn, and C.Sutherley.

  • FRIERNHAY'S DEVON SENIOR CUP RECORD.  Friernhay today made Devon amateur football history by beating Civil Service, Plymouth, at Home Park in the final tie of the County Senior Cup by two goals to nil to retain the trophy. It is the third time the Friars have won the Cup, a record for an East Devon team. Devon General won it twice, some years ago. Friernhay's success was well deserved, their football being of high class. Burrows and Erredge were the goalscorers.

Southern League
NEWPORT COUNTY RESERVES
v CITY RESERVES.

Exeter City Reserves' final Southern League match of the season was played off at Somerton Park, Newport, on Thursday evening. This was a rearrangement of the fixture of January 25th, which was cancelled owing to the ground being under water. Both teams appeared to be suffering from the staleness usually associated with the end of the season, and in the first half there were few exciting incidents. Newport had the better of the play, but Risdon and Miller were the rocks on which the County attacks always floundered. Robinson was also a fine Exeter defender, and McArthur a very lively raider. Five minutes before half-time Haycox scored for Newport after he had charged Kirk into the net with the ball. Exeter improved considerably in the second half, and the home goalmouth was the scene of much activity. McArdle scored for Exeter, and five minutes later Ebdon got a second goal. Exeter deserved their victory if only for the fact that they accepted the chances which came their way.

The City team was:- Kirk; Risdon and Miller; J.Scott, Robinson, and Fantham; V.Hoyle, Ebdon, McArdle, McLean, and McArthur.
