Exhibition game in North Devon
Plymouth Argyle v Exeter City
Saturday, April 25th 1936.
BRISTOL ROVERS
v EXETER CITY.
Exeter City have given many dismal displays this season, but none more so than that at Eastville today. Beaten by six goals to one, the City's exhibition had the end-of-the-season mark indelibly stamped upon it. The fact is that with a few exceptions Exeter City's was not a wholehearted performance. Some of their players seemed not to care overmuch. Consequently the team as a whole suffered. Tom Scott and Clarke tried to rally the side but their efforts were in vain. The Rovers won as easily as the score suggests. They were too fast and too clever for Exeter, and moreover they played as a team, and that is what Exeter City did not do. Exeter, fielding the same team as that which figured in a dull and goalless draw with Notts County a week ago, included three players who were formerly with one or other of Bristol's two professional clubs. They were Beby and McCambridge (Rovers) and Tom Scott (City). Conditions were all against a big crowd. A steady drizzle of rain set in and the attendance was not more than 3,000 when the teams appeared. Bristol won the toss.

Risdon twice cleared his lines cleverly in the opening minute, but when the Rovers attacked on the opposite flank they won a corner. The flag kick was nicely placed by Buckley, and from the ensuing scramble in the goalmouth Golledge headed a goal. Two goals were scored by Woodman in the 15th and 20th minutes, and Exeter already looked like a beaten team. Exeter rallied towards the interval and McCambridge scored from a long pass by Clarke, who drove the ball into the goalmouth. McArthur scored Bristol's fourth goal with a header, the ball hitting Beby's shoulder and flying into the net. The fifth goal was scored by the old City star, Houghton, who had merely to kick the ball into an empty net with Beby and the two backs floundering out of position, and the rout of Exeter was completed by Buckley, who was the best forward on view. A sparkling run by Houghton was the closing feature, Beby saving from the ex-Grecian.
CITY RESERVES V TIVERTON TOWN.
Chesters reappeared in the City Reserves' team against Tiverton at St James's Park, it being his first match the dislocation of his shoulder on February 22nd. Exeter won by a goal, scored by Dunn, to nil.
The City team was:-
Chesters; L. Brooking, Crompton; S.Haller, Robinson, S. Barnes; H.Jarrett, S. Pope, McArthur, Dunn, and V.Hoyle.

CITY RESERVES v ILFRACOMBE.
Although Clements played a wonderful game in goal for the visitors from North Devon, the City Reserves won easily by seven goals to nil. McArthur and Crompton, from a penalty, scored for the Reserves in the first half, the remaining goals being added by McArthur, Smith (2), Hoyle, and Jarrett.

EXHIBITION MATCH: ARGYLE AND EXETER IN NORTH DEVON. PLYMOUTH ARGYLE 4
EXETER CITY 2.
A crowd of about four thousand witnessed a match at Barnstaple on Wednesday evening between the City and the Argyle, it being the first occasion on which two professional teams have met in North Devon. The fixture was arranged in aid of the funds of the Devon County Football Association.

The City pressed at the start, and Clarke was unlucky with a shot that dropped just over the bar. After nine minutes' play Hunter ran through for the Argyle to open the scoring. A nice passing move in which McCambridge and T.Scott took part resulted in Ebdon scoring for Exeter, and T.Scott followed up with a second goal shortly afterwards. Osman levelled the scores just before half-time, and Smith in the second half obtained two goals to give the Argyle victory. Cann, Vidler, and Mitcheson retired at half-time, and Harper, Cookson, and S. Black took their positions after the interval.
