Saturday, February 27th.
EXETER CITY 3
NEWPORT COUNTY 1.

The City, in need of every point they can get, encountered this afternoon at St James's Park an equally desperate side in Newport County. Following a dismal start to the season, the County, whose manager is Mr Louis Page, formerly manager of Yeovil, plunged extensively into the transfer market, and the team has improved greatly since the acquisition of Duggan from Leeds United, Wood from the Villa, and Low and Carr from Liverpool. The City, who forced a meritorious draw at Gillingham on Wednesday, were compelled to make a couple of alterations. Brown, a damaged shoulder, Shadwell, injured ankle, and McGill, knee trouble, were all unavailable.

Rain fell persistently as the time for the kick off approached, and less than four thousand spectators were present at the start. One of the best goals ever seen at St James's Park was scored by Owen after 26 minutes. Smith centred to the goalmouth and one of the Newport backs headed clear. But the ball came to Owen, who was well outside the penalty area. He fastened on to the leather, drew two opponents, beat them "on a sixpence," and then ran on further to dribble past a third. Not content with all this he let fly with his left foot from twelve yards' out and landed the ball neatly in the far top corner of the net, beating Hillier completely. Exeter were by now dominating the game, and three times Williams came within an ace of scoring, being overtaken or baulked at the vital moment. Both Smith and Owen repeatedly were in the limelight,

and Newport were a lucky side not to have been more than one goal behind at the interval. Newport started the second half with a couple of menacing attacks and nearly snatched an equalising goal. Carr swept down the field and beat Stimpson. Duggan, given a perfect pass, closed in but his shot, with only Chesters to beat, was weak and wide of the mark. Chesters then dived full length to parry a shot from Derrick when all seemed lost, then Derrick with an open goal before him and with Chesters on the ground, shot so feebly that Boyle was able to run back and kick the slow moving ball out of the goalmouth.

GRECIANS REVIVE.

The game was now beginning to take an unhealthy turn, and there was no mistaking the intensity of Newport's bid to draw level. When at length the City pulled themselves together Pope centred to the goalmouth and beat Hillier but Webb (former Grecian) cleared with a well-timed header. Edwards was cautioned by the referee for a bad foul on Owen, then following this incident the Grecians revived and swarmed into the attack, Williams heading a brilliant goal from Clarke's free kick. Newport claimed a penalty for "hands" by Simpson, but the offence, if any, was entirely accidental, and the referee would have none of it. In fact, the official looked quite annoyed as he waved away the protesting County players. The visitors continued to show plenty of fight and pluck, and they gained encouragement with a goal scored by Derrick, whose grounder from fifteen yards found the corner of the net. Ten minutes before the finish the City increased their lead when Williams gained possession through Webb's attempted clearance re bounding off one of his colleagues. Williams took the ball forward a couple of yards and with perfect judgment beat Hillier with the best shot of the match, a stinging low drive to the far corner. In a late rally Newport scored two goals, both disallowed, one for a foul on Young and the other for offside against Derrick.

Wednesday, March 3rd.
IPSWICH TOWN v EXETER CITY RESERVES.

Exeter City Reserves made the tactical mistake of allowing Ipswich to settle on the ball, and the blunder was fully exposed by Bruce, McLuckie, and Williams, three players of considerable experience with First Division clubs. Blackwell (2), Carter and Dobson scored for Ipswich in the first half, and two more goals were obtained after the interval. Brown and Shadwell were included in the Reserves' side following a spell of inactivity due to injuries, and they both came through the test without further mishap.

City Reserves:- Tierney; Brown, Pollard; Hobbs, Bamsey, Shadwell; Keane, Scott, Ebdon, Johnson, Urmson.

Result:- Ipswich Town 6 Exeter City Reserves 0.
