GOALS GALORE
EXCITING DUEL BETWEEN SOUTHEND AND EXETER
Southend United 4, Exeter City 4
Eight goals at the Stadium give some indication of the high-speed duel between Southend and Exeter City. Southend set the pace throughout. They were one up at the interval, and at one time in the second half were actually three goals ahead. Exeter, however, content to play a waiting game, indulged in a spectacular last- minute recovery, and wiped out the deficit to share the points. As a matter of fact, Exeter were the first to get the ball into the net. McKenzie stopped Owen's drive, but let in a rather simple low shot from Pope. Southend returned with their storming tactics, and Lane equalised. Almost as the half-time whistle blew Bolan gave the home team the lead. It was a hectic second half, in which the Southend defence surprisingly collapsed six minutes from the end. to let Exeter score three goals. Southend attacked immediately from the restart, and after their goal had had a lucky escape from Pope, Bolan and Dickenson fired in two quick goals. By steadily resisting their opponents pressure, Exeter took the fight to the other end, and Pope reduced arrears. During another Exeter raid, Southend conceded a penalty, and Owens made no mistake with the spot-kick. Even then Southend might have saved the game, but Williams nipped in just on time and equalised.
