Match 41
17th March 1937
Millwall (h)
Wednesday, March 17th.
EXETER CITY 1 MILLWALL 1.
Millwall were without two of their star players at St James's Park this afternoon. Mangnall was unfit and Brolly was away at Wrexham, playing for Ireland v Wales. Palmer deputised for Brolly, and Barker, recently transferred from Bradford Park Avenue, for Mangnall. Exeter welcomed the return to the team of Brown and Pope. Millwall, who are the only club from the Third Division so far to have reached the F. A. Cup semi finals, and in doing so have done what Exeter City so narrowly failed to accomplish six years ago, were given an enthusiastic welcome by 3,000 spectators, although the attendance was very disappointing on a fine afternoon.

Thrilling Exeter raids almost brought about the downfall of the Millwall goal three times in that number of minutes. Playing brilliant football on the muddy ground the Exeter forwards bewildered the "Lions" defence, and a goal nearly accrued when a fierce drive by Bussey struck Burke on the shoulder, Burke being lucky to recover himself to smother the ball and kick clear. Williams drove the ball against the face of the crossbar, and Pope from the rebound header inches over. The City gained a well deserved lead after 25 minutes when a shot by Bussey was punched out by Burke and Williams netted the rebound. Millwall were lucky to escape when E. Smith kicked a shot from Owen away from the goalmouth. McCartney equalised in the second half to give Millwall a division of the points which they hardly deserved, and on this form it is difficult to understand Exeter's low position in the League.
