Match 42
20th March 1937
Brighton & Hove Albion (a)

Exeter and District League
South Molton (h)

Saturday, March 20th

BRIGHTON AND HOVE ALBION 1 EXETER CITY 0.

Before this afternoon's match at the Goldstone Road ground, the top three clubs in the Southern Section were Notts County with 44 points, Brighton with 42, and Luton Town with 41. A terrific shout from the crowd when it became known that Luton were two goals down against Bristol Rovers at half-time infused new life into the Brighton team, who until then had given a very ineffective display against Exeter City.

Brighton:- Thomson; King, Martin; Smith, Stevens, Walker; Farrell, Wilson, Law, Cargill, Stephens.
Exeter:- Tierney; Brown, Stimpson; Shadwell, Angus, Young; F.Smith, Johnson, Williams, McGill, Owen.

It was not until a quarter of an hour from the end that Law scored the all important (for Brighton) goal. Tierney partially saved his shot but allowed the ball to cross the line before he could get it away. Brighton thus retained their position as runners-up to Notts, and the City are still two places off the bottom of the League ladder.

EXETER AND DISTRICT LEAGUE.
Exeter City Res. v South Molton

The City Reserves are still piling up big scores in their Exeter and District League matches, and to day at St James's Park South Molton were the latest to feel the weight of their attack.

City Reserves:- Brooking; H.Booker, Hobbs; Coles, Bamsey, Barnes; Lawrence, Ebdon, Bulley, C. Smith, and Chudleigh.
South Molton:- Gannaway; Lamont, Lock; Dyer, Anderson, Holman; Mock, Kingdon, Larsen, Frith, and Williams.

The first half was evenly contested, Bulley and Lawrence scoring for the Reserves and Kingdon for South Molton. The North Devonians did manage to score another goal in the second half, through Mock, but were eventually overwhelmed by the City's superior stamina, and retired beaten by nine goals to two. Goals in the second half were registered for Exeter by Lock own goal, Coles, Smith (2) and Bulley (3).
