Exeter City's forwards, although clever enough in approach work, were weak with their attempts at finishing off their moves. When they did shoot accurately Mellors was invariably there to bar the way. Except for occasional attacks Bournemouth were not dangerous, but their defence, especially Mellors, compelled admiration. Against the run of the play the "Cherries" gained an early lead through Rowley, a promising outside left of eighteen years. Rowley netted with a brilliant first-time cross shot, and Tierney could hardly have seen the ball as it flashed by him into the net. Exeter dominated most of the play afterwards but could not force home their undisputed territorial advantage. Owen shot wide with a penalty kick given against the Bournemouth Smith for hand-ball, and Williams had a goal disallowed because of another forward being offside. It was not until 17 minutes from the end that the City equalised through Williams, who drove low into the net from F.Smith's centre.
