BRISTOL MAKE DRASTIC CHANGES: DRYDEN AT CENTRE FORWARD
EXETER SCORE IN FIRST TWO MINUTES: POPE RECALLED
Startling alterations were made in the Bristol City team for the return Football League match at Exeter this afternoon. In all, the changes numbered eight, and every department of the team except in goal, was affected. The most notable feature of the re-shuffle was the selection of Jack Dryden, formerly Exeter City's left winger, to lead the attack. The Grecians made one change, Pope being recalled at inside left, where he replaced McGill.

BRISTOL CITY
It was a grand afternoon for football, and a big holiday crowd saw Jack Angus win the toss and make a good start. Within two minutes the City had taken the lead. Pope, picking up a loose ball inside the penalty area, advanced a couple of yards and then passed to Williams. Pope by his quickness had created a model opportunity, and the ever-alert Williams was between the backs in a flash, to beat Wilson with a crashing shot which the goalkeeper never saw. This early goal aroused great enthusiasm, and the City were quickly raiding again, only to be pulled up this time for offside. When Bristol retaliated Stimpson coolly passed back to Tierney to avert the danger. Bristol's defence was unsteady under pressure an on one occasion Roberts sliced the ball dangerously towards his own goal. Wilson ran out to try to prevent a corner, but was unable to reach the ball in time, and Smith's flag-kick caused some anxiety to Bristol before it was cleared. Taking play to the other end in an all-out combined raid, Bristol threatened to get on terms until Stimpson dashed across and gave a corner in intercepting Armstrong's through pass. Stimpson got his boot to the ball a split second before Dryden, otherwise Exeter's goal must have fallen.
DEFLECTED BY PEARCE.
The spell of Bristol attacking ended when the Exeter left wing pair raced through, and Williams was given another opportunity, but his close range shot was deflected by Pearce, and Wilson saved without difficulty. Exeter were slightly the better side but both teams were inclined to overkick the light ball. Tierney saved Exeter when he parried a point blank shot by Dryden, and when the nimble ex-Grecian tried to get through again he was checked by Angus. Towards the interval a centre from Smith was missed by Kelly, and Williams was round the full-back in an instant. As Wilson advanced from his goal Williams coolly steered the ball low into the net at an acute angle. Half-time: Exeter City 2 Bristol City O. Bristol faded out badly after the interval and Exeter had a simple task to maintain their lead despite having Young injured early on. Young, who pulled a thigh muscle, was a limping passenger on the left wing for the remainder of the game, but it was from his low cross into the penalty area that Bussey scored the third goal with a neatly timed half-volley low into the corner of the net. Despite their draw with Bournemouth on Saturday and their victory this afternoon Exeter City's League position is still serious. With 26 points from 37 matches the City are bottom but one. Of the clubs immediately above them Newport and Walsall each have twenty seven points, and Cardiff twenty-nine.
