Biographical Text
Fred Urmson played for Exeter City in the mid-1930s joining the club from Tranmere Rovers where he had played over 300 league games and scored nearly a hundred goals. He later played for Stalybridge Celtic.
Fred joined Tranmere Rovers from Atherton in 1927 and had featured in 310 league games for the Prenton Park club during which time he scored 94 times.Arriving at St James' Park aged twenty-eight, Fred was seen as a significant signing for City and went striaght into the Grecians' team for the opening fixture of the season at Notts County in August 1936. Appearing in the first nine games of the season, he gave way to John Keane and only appeared once more for the first-team in the game at home to Brighton and Hove Albion on 14 November 1936.
Leaving St James’ Park after just one season, Fred linked up with Stalybridge Celtic before turning out for South Liverpool and Mossley in the seasons leading to the outbreak of war.
Fred Urmson died on 11 September 1985 in the Blackpool area.
