Biographical Text

Fred Urmson played for Exeter City in the mid-1930s joining the club from Tranmere Rovers where he had played over 300 league games and scored nearly a hundred goals. He later played for Stalybridge Celtic.

He had made his name with Tranmere Rovers, whom he joined in 1927 from Atherton. He featured in 310 league games for the Prenton Park club, scoring 94 goals, so much was expected on him when he moved to Exeter City in the summer of 1936.

He went straight into the Grecians first team and made his debut on the opening day of the season, a 3-1 defeat at Notts County in August 1936. He was to play in all ten of the first league matches that season, but only made one further outing.

After leaving St James’ Park after just one season, he returned north and linked up with Stalybridge Celtic. He then played for South Liverpool, before appearing for Mossley in 1939-40 when he scored 8 goals in 28 starts.

Fred Urmson died on 11 September 1985 in the Blackpool area.
