Exeter City Reserves v Ilfracombe

Saturday, April 10th.

EXETER CITY 3 BRISTOL ROVERS 2.

Making a rare and welcome re-appearance at the Exeter City ground today was Harold "Happy" Houghton, now the Rovers' top goalscorer with eleven to his credit. Good judges among the City's following consider Houghton to be one of the best forwards ever to have worn the Grecians' colours. It was a typical Exeter Saturday afternoon, only more so. The rain which had fallen throughout the morning showed no signs of easing, and there were pools of water on the playing pitch. The conditions were deplorable, and it is no wonder that the attendance numbered little more than a couple of thousand. None but the most hardened of football "fans" would have ventured out on such an afternoon.

The Rovers won the toss, but the mud-larking Grecians were quickly raiding, and they almost took the lead in the first minute, when from Smith's thoughtful short pass Bussey tried to put Williams through. The visiting defence was in great difficulty, and they were fortunate when Williams's shot struck a defender and rebound ed to safety with Nicholls out of position.

THE HOUGHTON MAGIC.
Exeter supporters had not long to wait for a touch of the Houghton magic, for it was from his low, raking transfer across the field that the unmarked Butterworth was able to go on and test Tierney with a low cross-shot which the 'keeper gathered. The City were having slightly the better of the exchanges, and they took the lead after 14 minutes. Bussey cleverly advanced and drew

the defence before parting. Williams immediately got the ball under control, and although challenged by O'Mahoney he held on and in a flash whipped a fast low shot into the back of the net, Nicholls being powerless to save. The Rovers now began to get on top, and after Tierney had saved a

fierce drive from Hartill, a shot from Houghton shaved the top of the crossbar, the ball gathering speed all the way. Houghton, who was playing a superb game on his old ground, cut out the opening for a sparkling Bristol raid. By dint of dazzling and dainty footwork he left three opponents floundering, but the move came to naught when Sullivan centred behind his colleagues.

WILLIAMS WATCHED BY BURNLEY.
Exeter increased their lead with a "gift" goal. Williams, who was being watched by representatives of Burnley, beat the defence, and crossed to Owen in the goalmouth, and the little left-winger had merely to turn the ball into the net from about two yard's range. The outstanding players in the first half were Tierney for Exeter and Houghton for Bristol. The former had saved the City on several occasions; the latter had no equal when it came to clever ball control. The City were lucky to be two goals ahead at the interval. The first incident of note in the second half was a brilliant save by Tierney from Butterworth, who had been put through by Houghton. Exeter then went further ahead, Williams slamming the ball into the net with a low shot from McGill's crossfield pass. With a quarter of an hour remaining the Rovers reduced the margin, and this time even the brilliant Tierney was powerless to clear a full-blooded drive from McArthur, the ball flying into the top of the net from twelve yards' range. Five minutes from time Sullivan scored with a penalty for "hands" against Brown.

Result: Tiverton 2 City Reserves 7.

DARTFORD 2 EXETER CITY RES. 1.

Boyle scored from a penalty for the City Reserves in the Southern League match at Dartford, but Dartford then got two goals and were worthy winners. Gardiner was Dartford's outstanding player, the same as he was at St James's Park on September 16th.

CITY RESERVES v ILFRACOMBE.

At St James's Park before a small attendance, this Exeter League match was won by the City Reserves by four goals to one. V.Clemence surprised the Grecians by scoring for Ilfracombe soon after the start, but Pope equalised twenty minutes before half time, when the score was 1 - 1. Fifteen minutes after the change of ends Bamsey gave the Reserves the lead with a great shot from 30 yards. Further goals were registered by Pope and Bussey, and Boyle missed with a penalty kick. The feature of the game was the plucky and dogged defence of the visiting backs and goalkeeper. Parker, the right half, was also a tireless worker both in defence and attack.
