EXETER CITY 2 READING 0

Angus lost the toss and Exeter kicked off from the St James's Road end facing the wind but with a brilliant sun at their backs. They immediately began to outplay Reading, who were hardly ever in the picture during the first fifteen minutes.

Shots by Owen and Williams narrowly missed, then Exeter obtained a well deserved goal after half an hour's play, Williams heading the ball on for Bussey to seize his opportunity and shoot low into the corner of the net. Exeter continued to attack until the interval, and Tierney was left with practically nothing to do. Poor football by both sides characterised the exchanges after the interval. Reading's chances were not improved by the loss of Tait, who went on the left wing for a while after receiving a groin injury, finally going off altogether. The City should have piled up a large score against such moderate opposition as Reading provided, but their finishing was weak, and chance after chance was thrown away, to the exasperation of their supporters, who numbered about three thousand. One minute from the end Bussey scored his second goal from Owen's centre.

Southern League
Margate v Exeter City Reserves

Exeter City Reserves, playing their last Southern League match of the season at Margate, were beaten by three goals to one.

A GOOD FINISH.

Margate Beat Exeter at Hartsdown.

Margate 3 Exeter City Res, 1.

Margate brought their season's programme to a close at Hartsdown, on Saturday, when they defeated Exeter City Res. in a Southern League match by three goals No one.

Exeter had an excellent defence, and the first haif provided a blank score sheet. Margate exerted pressure during the second half and Exeter were indebted to Chesters, their goalkeeper, for the fact that more than three goals were not scored against them. Bosse was outstanding in defence for Margate and always appeared on the scene when wanted. Heal displayed good form at centre-half and the most prominent forward was Fright, although Walsh was extremely dangerous during the second half of the game. Smith should have given Exeter the lead soon after the start, but he shot wide with only Marks to beat. Had Exeter's finishing been as good as their approach work. Margate would have been considerably in arrears at the interval. Margate, too, were sinners in the matter of marksmenship, and Jenner twice shot wide when Chesters put him off his shots.
Some of the steadiness of Exeter had vanished when the second half began and Margate were soon on the aggressive. Chesters made a brilliant one-handed save from Walsh, but the forward named had his revenge soon afterwards when he re- ceived a pass from Bosse and opened Mar. gate's account Five minutes later. Keane punched away a shot from Jenner. and the Margate centre-forward scored from the resultant penalty. The Margate defenders were caught napping by McGill, who ran through and beat Marks to reduce the City's arrears. but ten minutes from time Fright scored Margate's third and final goal.
