CITY LOSE AT HOME:ALDERSHOT DESERVING WINNERS
Saturday, October 9th 1937.
EXETER CITY 0 ALDERSHOT (Butt) 1.
The opening exchanges, without being brilliant, were fast and exciting, both defences being tested in turn. Aldershot took the upper hand, and Exeter were lucky when Brown headed off the goal line a lob by Butt, with Tierney hopelessly out of position. Butt scored a brilliant goal for Aldershot following a clever movement started by Clarke, the Grecians' old half-back, after 22 minutes. Aldershot, whose positional play was vastly superior to that of Exeter, were deserving winners, but the City could have saved one point if they had had a half-back of Clarke's calibre. Exeter are now back in the "slough of despond," and continue to linger in the bottom position which they have occupied all too frequently during the last couple of seasons.
City:- Tierney; Brown, Wallace; Kavanagh, Angus, Shadwell; Miles, Bussey, Bowl, Ebdon, Liddle.
Aldershot:- Greaves; Sheppard, Williams; Clarke, Robson, Burnicle; Warnes, Butt, Ray, Egan, Kilsby.

At Plainmoor, Torquay, this afternoon, the Torquay United and the Exeter City clubs fought out the final replay of last year's Devon Professional Championship.
Jones, winning the toss, set Exeter City to face the sun at the start. Exeter immediately pressed, and Pope placed the ball wide with a hard shot from Bowl's pass. Morton forced a corner, from which Philbin drove high over the bar. After 38 minutes' play Philbin sent Bond away, and the winger beat Wallace in his stride before putting in a fine centre to Morton, who beat Tierney with a brilliant header to give Torquay the lead. In the second half Morton scored for Torquay and Bowl for Exeter.
PLYMOUTH ARGYLE RESERVES
v EXETER CITY RESERVES.
Southern League match at Home Park, Plymouth.
Ben Clarke was unavailable through an ankle injury, but the City Reserves did better than expected in an entertaining match. Walker's brilliant goalkeeping was the feature of the game, and he was well supported by Topping and Pollard. Exeter, who were losing by 3 goals to 1 in the second half, showed good attacking ideas and finished the stronger side. Clarke, who had scored in the first half, got another goal to reduce the de ficit, and Storey equalised with three minutes remaining.
Result:-
Argyle Reserves 3 City Reserves 3.
