POPE IS ASSET TO EXETER
Exeter 4, Mansfield 0
AFTER watching their team beat Mans- 4-0, the Exeter selectors must have realised that it does not pay to ignore the obvious. They ought to have known at the start of the season that Pope was the best inside-left on their books. But they did not include him until Saturday, and he scored two goals, besides giving an intelligent display. Coulston, also concerned in a belated promotion to the first team, was the outstanding winger in the game, and Bussey made a bril- liant partner. Bowl, scorer of Exeter's two other goals, played with great dash after the interval. Mansfield were unconvincing. They were poorly represented at left and centre-half, and at full-back where Stimpson and Bungay fre- quently blundered. Hughes did well in goal, and the forwards were good up to a point. They were neat in midfield, but the line lacked a marksman
Match Summary
Exeter City staged a come-back and astounded everyone to-day. They beat Mansfield Town by four clear goals, and the victory was well and truly deserved. The entire side played with a fine degree of balance, precision, and match-winning thrust, which had been absent from most of their recent displays. Although not figuring among the scorers Walter Bussey, who has been appointed captain, played one of his best games since joining the City. His passing was splendidly judged, and timed to perfection.
It seems that in almost every match this season the Grecians find themselves against one or more of their former colleagues in their opposing team. The list already consists of Owen and Webb (Newport County), Dryden (Bristol City), McArthur (Bath City, in a reserves match), Reg Clarke (Aldershot), and Smith and Young (Gillingham). This afternoon it was George Stimpson, who partnered Bungay, late of Plymouth Argyle, in the Mansfield full-back division. Stimpson was however "run off his legs" by Coulston, who profiting from the passes he received from Bussey had an excellent match.
