EXETER CITY 4
NORTHAMPTON TOWN 1.

Saturday, October 30th 1937.
At St James's Park. Attendance 6,000.

City:Tierney; Brown, Wallace; Shadwell, Bamsey, Angus; Coulston, Bussey, Bowl, Pope, W.Clarke.
Northampton:- Gormlie; Gunn, Russell; Hewitt, Thayne, Postlethwaite; Dunkley, Hoult, Allen, Dickinson, Riley.
Referee:- Mr L.E.Gibbs, of Reading.

For the second home match in succession Exeter City scored four goals, and what is more, accounted for a side which played a lot of clever football, especially before the interval. Pope and Bowl were the marksmen of the City attack. Each scored twice, but the entire attack played well, and Bussey was as usual prominent on account of his shrewd scheming. Except for an uncertain period midway through the first half, the City intermediate line was satisfactory. Bamsey had a very strong and experienced centre-forward to mark in Allen, and Shadwell and Angus were sometimes hard pressed to cope with Northampton's well planned first-half raids.
GRAND DEFENDERS.
Brown was a great defender for Exeter. His interceptions and powers of recovery were most effective. In goal Tierney did not make a mistake, and he was in no way to blame for the shot from Allen which beat him, after half an hour's play. Bowl scored Exeter's first goal after five minutes, and Pope five minutes later followed up with number two. After Allen had scored for the Cobblers Pope put the City 3-1 in front a minute or two before half-time, and Bowl completed the scoring twenty minutes after the change of ends.
