Attendance 4,000.
Exeter City's craft triumphed over Walsall's dash today, when the City, winning by two goals (Bowl and W.Clarke) gained their first victory on this ground. The success was fully deserved, and in the closing stages Exeter so dominated matters that they might have easily made the margin still more pronounced.

HOME SIDE FAIL WITH PENALTY
Cheltenham Town's Southern League eleven re-visited Exeter to-day to oppose the City Re- serves whom they so decisively de- feated 4-2 in the Southern League Cup competition on Wednesday last. With the City out to avenge their defeat and the Town fighting to enhance their reputation and strengthen the con- fidence placed in them, a keen tussle was anticipated. Cheltenham were dangerous early, and a crowd of about 800 saw them nearly take the lead in the first minute. Ray put across a grand centre, and the ball travelled on to Thorley, who promptly centred it again. Unfortunately neither Rushforth nor Leedham was quick enough to get the better of Church. Cheltenham kept on the attack for nearly ten minutes, Church being given a hectic fime in the City goal. Eventually the City broke away, and Wheeler tipped over the bar a fierce seven yards' drive from Clarke. At the other end, Church put over a well-taken free kick by Ray. Exeter showed improvement in attack and went near when Ebdon and McGill just missed with good shots. Cheltenham were superior in their control of the ball and in combination, and their cleverly executed raids often spelt danger. A penalty kick was awarded Exeterl for hands by Green. The kick was taken by Clarke, who shot a yard outside. Golledge and Williams were brilliant in the Cheltenham defence, and Whitney gave little scope to the fast moving Exeter forwards.
Exeter were in aggressive mood early in the second half, but their finishing continued to be poor. Clarke raced through, and from close range shot wide, and at the other end Thorley missed a golden chance by putting outside after Ray had supplied him with a perfect centre. A determined Exeter attack in which several shots were charged down ended in McGill shooting wide. Seventeen minutes after the interval Exeter went ahead through MILES, who, taking a pass from Clarke, raced past Lynch and beat Wheeler with a rising cross-shot. Exeter were now having the better of the game, and 15 minutes later they increased their lead. Wheeler dived in a vain effort to save a shot by Clarke, and Williams, standing in the goal-line, merely succeeded in placing the ball into his own net when he attempted to kick clear. Wheeler was knocked out in his fall and had to receive the trainer's attention. Cheltenham made strong efforts to reduce the City's lead but there was no further score.

Cheltenham:- Wheeler; Williams, Lynch; Golledge, Whitney, Green; Ray, McCambridge, Rushforth, Leedham, Thorley.
