Match 04
7th September 1938
Mansfield Town (h)
September 7th 1938.
EXETER CITY 2
MANSFIELD TOWN O.
At St James's Park on Wednesday evening Exeter City won their second home match of the season without conceding a goal. They made hard work of it, however, in beating Mansfield Town, who were a team with little to commend them apart from a rugged endeavour in defence and a brilliant goalkeeper in Hughes, formerly of Blackburn Rovers and a Welsh International. The visiting forwards were whole-hearted and enthusiastic, but the line lacked the essential cohesion and method, especially in the middle.

MANSFIELD:
Carter met his master in Fellowes, and he was almost blotted out of the game by the Exeter centre-half, who has taken over the captaincy from Bussey. Fellowes played a real leader's part, and was one of the few City players who kept a cool head when it was most needed. Exeter's goals were scored by Turnbull (first half), and Ebdon. By far the best player on the field was Ebdon, who has made a rapid advance since gaining a regular place last season. Ben Clarke, who has been signed on again, deputised for Little at left back, and made a reliable partner for Brown. Stimpson, the former City player, was at right back for Mansfield Town.
- It is understood that Bob Wallace is seriously ill.
