Torquay United Res. (a)
EXETER CITY 2 CARDIFF CITY 1.
Saturday, November 13th 1937, at St James's Park.
Attendance 10,000.
Exeter:- Church; Brown, Wallace;
Shadwell, Bamsey, Angus; Coulston, Bussey, Bowl, Pope, W.Clarke.
Cardiff:- Jones; Granville, L.Ford; McCaughey, Mort, Godfrey; Pugh, Walton, Collins, Talbot, Turner.
Referee:- Mr E.W. Vokes, of Bath.
The season's largest crowd at St James's Park saw Exeter snatch a dramatic victory. It was a close call. Two minutes from the end the sides were level at a goal each, Bowl ten minutes after the change of ends having equalised a goal scored by Collins in the first half. Then, when everything pointed to a drawn contest Bussey scored the best goal seen on the ground for a long time. Receiving a perfect pass from Clarke, he set off goalwards, beating two of the Cardiff defenders by sheer pace and clever footwork, then from twelve yards out he completely deceived Jones with a beautifully placed shot to the bottom corner of the net. It was fitting that Bussey should have been instrumental in getting the vital goal, for beyond doubt he was the outstanding forward on the field. In fact he lifted the City vanguard from a commonplace standard to one of high quality.
DETERMINATION TELLS.
Church, playing his first match for the City, may have been a bit late in falling to Collins's shot which beat him in the first half, but he made some good clearances to compensate subsequently. Cardiff were the more polished side before the interval. Their neat and precise combination and intelligent positioning were superior to anything the Grecians could show. Determination and enthusiasm were Exeter's assets. Those qualities had more than anything else to do with today's victory.
Southern League
TORQUAY RESERVES v CITY RESERVES. Ebdon put Exeter ahead after 27 minutes, McGill adding two further goals in the second half.
