Match 10
15th October 1938
Torquay United (h)

Southern League
Torquay United Res. (a)

Saturday, October 15th 1938.
EXETER CITY 1
TORQUAY UNITED 2.

For threequarters of the game Exeter had so much of the play that they seemed set for victory. The prospects was enhanced when Millar gave them the lead twenty minutes after the start of the second half. Soon afterwards the City faded out. The defence, losing its earlier speed and confidence, allowed Torquay to get on top, and the Magpies, scoring twice within a few minutes, turned an apparent defeat into a dramatic victory.

Torquay United:

Brown, a great full-back for most of the afternoon, was unlucky in that he let Pope get across the centres which brought the two Torquay goals. On both occasions Pope showed admirable judgment, and altogether he did enough to suggest that Exeter could have kept him for another season. The attendance was 8,000.

EXETER CITY RES. 2.

In the junior "Devon Derby" at Plainmoor the City nearly took the lead in the opening five minutes. Little crossed the ball to Clarke, who beat Lievesley and sent in a terrific drive, but Maggs succeeded in turning the leather over the bar. Exeter's left flank continually threatened danger, and a fast run down the touchline by Liddle provided Riley with a chance which the ex-"Cobbler" turned to account, in 22 minutes. Perry scored for Torquay following a corner. Riley (Exeter) and Shelley (Torquay) scored in the second half.
