EXETER CITY 2
NEWPORT COUNTY 0.
Saturday, January 1st 1938, at St James's Park.
Attendance 5,272.
At the beginning of 1937 Exeter City, then second from bottom, had picked up only eleven points, six less than they had gained prior to this afternoon's match. Harold Webb, who led the Newport attack against Exeter in the opening match of this season, played at right-back today, and at outside left was Bill Owen, one of last year's Grecians. Bussey lost the toss and Exeter kicked off from the St James's Road end.

Shadwell, dribbling towards the centre, had his attempted pass down the middle blocked by Foote. From Foote the ball travelled to Hickman and then out to Duggan, whose cross into the goalmouth was sent a yard wide by Hickman. Exeter now took control, and clever work by Pope and Little put the Newport goal in danger until Webb saved at the expense of an unproductive corner.
City's Copybook Goal.
Up and down exchanges between evenly matched teams prefaced a goal to the City after 15 minutes. And a good goal it was. Three players shared in the move, and the ball was in the net. Bussey on the edge of the penalty area made a perfect pass to Coulston, who transferred first time to Pope. Pope's shot from twelve yards had Pearson hopelessly beaten. Bowl scored Exeter's second goal after the interval, beating Pearson in a thrilling race for the ball.

EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.
Saturday, January 8th 1938,
at Ilfracombe.
Exeter City "chiefs" were without a match today on account of the third round of the Cup. The Reserves played a friendly match at Ilfracombe, who had the services of a player who is regarded as the cleverest centre-forward in North Devon in Jack Warren, Combe Martin. Scouts from the Arsenal, Newport County and Wolverhampton Wanderers watched the game, and in particular Warren. The City Reserves, accompanied by six directors, were after the match entertained at Messrs Southcombe's, by the invitation of the president of the Ilfracombe club, the Rev. I. Siviter.

CITY RESERVES
The slippery ground was not favourable to good football. Exeter commenced swiftly, Miles being prominent on the right. The match had only been in progress for five minutes when Ebdon received a neat pass from Storey, dribbled round two Ilfracombe de fenders and the goalkeeper, and walked the ball into the net. Ilfracombe worked hard against more polished opposition, and in fifteen minutes scored through Thomas, following a corner. Miles delighted the crowd when he received from Coles and ran right through the home defence to score a picture goal. The lead was increased by Ebdon from McGill's pass, and at half-time Exeter led by three goals to one. Newell reduced Ilfracombe's arrears in the second half with a splendid header after Tierney had partly cleared from Warren.
