Match 26
12th January 1938
ECFC v Brighton & Hove Albion

EXETER CITY 4
BRIGHTON & HOVE ALBION 0.

Wednesday, January 12th 1938, at St James's Park.

Brighton, who were beaten 2-0 by Bury in the third round Cup tie on Saturday, were defeated by double that score at St James's Park this afternoon by Exeter City. In dull weather between two and three thousand spectators saw Exeter kicked off from the railway end, and Bamsey, breaking up a thrust by Brighton down the middle, set his own forwards on the attack. A fast and clever movement followed, and when the ball was centred from the right Liddle fired first-time wide of the posts, with Thomson helplessly beaten.

The City attacked persistently and opened the scoring in the eleventh minute. Liddle took the Brighton defence by surprise when he cut in and beat Thomson with a rising oblique shot after a pass down the middle by Bamsey had split the visiting defence. Goffey missed an easy chance for Brighton by failing to control the ball quickly enough, and Stephens just missed the upright with a fierce ground shot with the linesman on the far side flagging for offside. A fatal blunder by Stevens, who headed into his own net from a cross by Coulston gave Exeter their second goal. Coulston provided the third by lobbing the ball over Marriott's head, giving Bowl the opportunity to drive left-footed into the net from close range. Bowl scored Exeter's last goal near the close.
