Match 27
15th January 1938
Bristol City (a)

Southern League
Ipswich Town (h)

BRISTOL CITY 4 EXETER CITY 1.

Saturday, January 15th 1938,
at Ashton Gate, Bristol.
Attendance 7,000.

Rowles, Bristol  City's young centre-forward, made a dramatic entry into big "Soccer" today, scoring three goals against Exeter in his first professional match. Bristol won by four goals to one but were flattered by such a margin. They were defending for long periods against a team which played clever football only to fail in the shooting range. It was not Exeter's lucky day.

Bristol:- Dawson; Brook, Turner; Morgan, Pearce, Armstrong; Peters, Booth, Rowles, Brain, Dryden.
Exeter: Church; B.Clarke, Wallace; Shadwell, Bamsey, Angus; Coulston, Bussey, Bowl, Pope, Liddle.
Referee: Mr W.E.Plyer, of Weymouth.

Bristol took the lead after twenty minutes with one of the most remarkable goals imaginable. Church, taking a goal kick, stumbled, and the ball trickled slowly to the unmarked Rowles, who with the coolness of a veteran promptly slammed the ball straight into the net before Church could get back into position. Two more goals by Rowles in the second half sealed the City's fate, but Bowl with a drive into the roof of the net from fifteen yards gave the City some encouragement. Angus hit the crossbar and Bamsey crashed a shot into the side netting, but fifteen minutes from time Peters fired home a spectacular 25 yards' shot into the top corner of Exeter's goal.

Southern League
