Match 28
22nd January 1938
Watford (h)

Southern League
Norwich City Res. (a)

EXETER CITY 1 WATFORD 2.

Saturday, January 22nd 1938,
at St James's Park.
Attendance 7,000.Watford continued their winning ways at St James's Park this afternoon, when they defeated Exeter City by the odd goal out of three. The result in no way flattered Watford, who were superior in football craft and quicker on the ball. Bowl, the one Exeter forward to impress, scored his side's goal from a penalty, awarded for a foul on Liddle. It is conceivable that Bowl would have done more damage had he received anything like adequate support.

Exeter attacked strongly from the kick off but met a rock-like defence. Keeping their wingers well supplied with the ball, the Grecians maintained the pressure, but did not score, chiefly because of the inability of Pope and Bussey to take advantage of openings. Against the run of the play Johnson headed a goal for Watford in the Hertfordshire team's first serious attack. Walters, an ex-Grecian, scored Watford's second goal after one by Johnson had been disallowed.

  • The City missed a good player a couple of years ago, when they failed to note the possibilities of Reed, who was born in Exeter and played for Friernhay in his amateur days.
Southern League
Norwich City Reserves beat Exeter City Reserves in the Southern League match at Norwich by one goal (Middleton) to nil.
