Saturday, November 12th 1938.

EXETER CITY 4
CRYSTAL PALACE 4.

There were plenty of thrills in today's match at St James's Park, in which Exeter City and Crystal Palace evenly divided eight goals. Defensive blunders in the first half left the Grecians with an uphill battle, but they retaliated in dogged style, and in the end were well worth a point.

Crystal Palace:

Wet weather, coupled with recent disappointments in the matter of results and form, had a dual effect upon the attendance, and no more than 5,000 were present when Fellowes won the toss. The Palace team had a strong West-country flavour about it, Steele and Lievesley, both formerly of Torquay United, and Chesters, Exeter's old goalkeeper, being in their ranks. After Steele and Albert Dawes had given the Palace a good lead Collins accidentally scored for Exeter by turning a pass from Rich into his own goal. Bowl then placed the City on equality but Albert Dawes scored goal number three for the Palace. Fred Dawes with a free kick from about 40 yards added the fourth Crystal Palace goal in the second half, but there was plenty of fight still left in Exeter, and after Liddle had reduced the deficit to a single goal Riley drove past Chesters from close range for the equaliser to a very thrilling match.

BARRY 1
EXETER CITY RESERVES 5.

The City Reserves scored a runaway victory at Barry against a weak home team, as Barry were also playing Yeovil in an English Cup-tie (qualifying competition last round).
