TORQUAY UNITED
Two second half goals gave Exeter City a well deserved victory over Torquay United, a side with more determination than skill, at St James's Park this afternoon. The outstanding feature, and one which riled the crowd, was the unncessarily vigorous tactics of certain Torquay players. Both full-backs were guilty of needless bad fouls, and in the second half, following an incident with Liddle, Green had his name taken by the referee.
PLENTY OF ENERGY.
Torquay battled with plenty of energy, but football craft was missing, except when Philbin, a clever forward, had possession. Philbin was easily Torquay's best manipulator, and his artistic footcraft stood out in pleasant relief to the kick and rush method of most of his colleagues. Bussey, a hard working forward, was Exeter's best attacker in the first half. After the interval Coulston took the honours, with Liddle also prominent. Coulston frequently beat Stokes with almost consummate ease in the second half. Exeter are sounder in defence than Torquay, who were inclined to neglect the all-important art of covering.
Scorers:-
Stokes own goal and Liddle.
