Match 19

Southern League
Guildford (a)
Saturday, December 10th 1938.
EXETER CITY 3 NORTHAMPTON TOWN 2.
Exeter City snatched an amazing win against Northampton Town at St James's Park this afternoon after missing a penalty kick and "giving" a goal away. It was a hard fought and at times a most exciting match, and Exeter were certainly not flattered by the result. It was their first victory since October 8th. Twice the Grecians were in arrears, but they rallied well, and in contrast to a number of recent matches, they were the better and more dominant side in the closing stages.
City: Church; Brown, Clarke; Walker, Angus, Fellowes; Rich, Riley, Bowl, Ebdon, Liddle.
Northampton:- Jones; Gunn, Russell; Blunt, Thayne, Postlethwaite; Hurrell, Tilson, Hewitt, McCartney, Rodger. Referee:- Mr G.T. Gould, of London.
Rain fell steadily all the morning, and overcast skies indicated that unpleasant conditions would exist throughout the match. The ground was waterlogged and less than 4000 saw the game. McCartney scored for the Cobblers after twenty-five minutes and Ebdon equalised with a flashing shot to the top corner of the net, Jones having no chance of reaching the ball. With only a minute remaining to the interval, Bowl was brought down unfairly by Russell inside the penalty area. Bowl took the spot-kick, and shot low to Jones's left. With cat-like agility Jones sprang across his goal and turned the ball round the post for a corner. The flag-kick was cleared. Northampton's second goal, twelve minutes after the interval, was absolutely given to them by Clarke, who tapped the ball into his own net in trying to clear from Hewitt. Clarke was badly at fault, for he could have easily given a corner. Two late goals by Riley and Bowl finally won the match for the City.
