Southern League
Swindon Reserves (h)
SWINDON TOWN 2
EXETER CITY 1.
Saturday, December 17th 1938.
A grand struggle at the Wiltshire County Ground this afternoon ended with the City being overhauled and eventually losing by two goals to one after being in front at the interval. Both sides played sparkling football, and the match was packed with thrills and clever movements. It was a pity that either of these sides had to lose, so brilliant was the display of each.
Swindon Town: Wildman; Parkhouse, Butcher; Cousins, Morrall, Olney; Jones, Francis, Morton, Lucas, Barraclough.
Exeter City: Church; Brown, Clarke; Walker, Angus, Fellowes; Rich, Riley, Bowl, Ebdon, Liddle.
Referee:- Mr E.L.Davies, of Wincanton.
Less than six minutes after the start Exeter were awarded a free kick thirty yards' out. Fellowes took it and crashed the ball into the top of the net past the surprised goalkeeper. Riley was prominent in the City attack with clever footwork and perfect distribution of the ball. From one of his well judged passes Bowl rattled the crossbar with a shattering drive. Morton and Barraclough scored for Swindon in the second half and the City had a goal disallowed for offside.
Southern League
CITY RESERVES 1
SWINDON RESERVES 3.
The Southern League match at St James's Park was identical to the Chiefs' encounter at Swindon in that the City were leading at half-time but were overhauled. Turnbull scored Exeter City's goal in the seventh minute from Southcombe's centre.

Swindon Reserves:- Bryan; Bates and Bradley; Emery, Chambers, and Woodman; Packer, Painter, Pierpoint, Harris, Woolhouse.
The City clearly held the upper hand in the first half. Swindon improved in the second half and scored three times with goals by Harris, Painter, and Pierpont.
