Match 34
5th March 1938
Bristol Rovers (h)
EXETER CITY 0
BRISTOL ROVERS 0.
Saturday, March 5th 1938.
At St James's Park, Exeter.
Attendance 6,000.
There were few thrills in a goal-less game at Exeter to day, where the City disappointed by failing to beat Bristol Rovers. For long periods the game was very scrappy. Neither of the two forward lines managed successfully to master the light ball, and constructive movements were few and far between.

Defences were generally on top in an uninspiring game. Exeter had more of the game territorially, but their efforts faded out in the vicinity of the goal. The Rovers came near to winning in the closing stages when they forced the pace against a rattled Exeter side. Bowl was unable to play, but his deputy, Ebdon, did not let the side down in the slightest. He led the attack with any amount of great deal in dash, but was not well supported. A succession of minor infringements contributed a great deal in spoiling the match. Bristol Rovers, like Exeter, were better in defence than attack.
- Billy McDevitt, Exeter City's manager during the clubs' period of greatest success, has been appointed manager of the Distillery Club, Belfast.
