Match 21
24th December 1938
Cardiff City (h)
Southern League
Cardiff City Res (a)
EXETER CITY 1 CARDIFF CITY 1.
Saturday, December 24th 1938.
Denied two penalties, one in the first half when Rich, going through strongly, was bundled off the ball, and the other in the closing minute when Rich was tripped, Exeter City were the victims of poor refereeing at St James's Park today. On a playing pitch that was frostbound in places both the City and Cardiff fought hard. Cardiff took the lead through Egan, and Riley replied for Exeter, both goals being scored in the first half. There were four thousand spectators.

Cardiff City:
Considering the conditions, the ground frozen in many places and liberally sanded, both defences played well. Church did not make a single mistake in goal, and no fault could be found with the backs. Bassett was prominent in the Cardiff defence. The Cardiff right wing pair were playing their first game for the club, Egan having been signed from Aldershot and Rhodes from Torquay United, for whom he played in the recent F. A. Cup - tie against Exeter City.

CARDIFF RESERVES 1
EXETER CITY RESERVES 2.
Anxious to improve their position in the Southern League table, Cardiff fielded no fewer than nine players with Football League experience at Ninian Park today. Court gave them the lead with a neat header in the first half and Turnbull equalised. Mellish put Exeter ahead with a good shot in the second half and a further goal by Bussey was disallowed for offside.
