SOUTHEND UNITED
Bussey lost the toss, and Exeter faced the wind in the opening half. The opening exchanges were scrappy, both teams being bothered by the light ball. Long clearance kicks by B. Clarke and Wallace failed to profit the City, and when Ebdon tried to open out the game his passes to the wings were twice intercepted by Deacon.
Southend's Clever Goal.
The wind was having an unsettling effect on the players, and many passes were going astray. The City were having the better of the exchanges territorially, but at the end of 21 minutes they were a goal down. Jackson dribbled past W.Clarke and lobbed the ball forward to Martin, who had veered out to the left to outpace Coles. Martin's centre was a model of perfection, and Hall, closing in, easily headed past Church. Ten minutes after the change of ends the City equalised, Ebdon diverting a free kick by B.Clarke into the net.
