Exeter City staged a second half come-back and defeated their visitors from Bournemouth by three goals to one after being a goal behind at the interval. In a rousing rally the City dominated the exchanges during the second half. Even the brilliant Bournemouth defence wilted under the severe pressure which Exeter exerted in this period.

The City's goals were scored by Bowl, Bussey, and Shadwell. In the first half Rhodes had given Boscombe the lead with his second attempt, having struck the upright with his original shot.
