Match 25
14th January 1939
Reading (h)

Southern League
Norwich City Res (h)

EXETER CITY 3 READING 2.
Saturday, January 14th 1939.

A goal by Riley less than five minutes from the finish brought Exeter City a belated home victory in an exciting game today. Heavy rain fell throughout the match, and with the playing pitch a sea of mud it was remarkable that the pace was maintained at such a fast rate as it was. Naturally there were mistakes, but they were excusable errors. At times the ball stuck in the mud, while at others it skidded away like lightning.

Exeter City:
Blore
Brown Clarke
Walker Angus Fellowes
Rich Bussey Bowl Ebdon Riley
Referee:- Mr W.E.Plyer, of Weymouth.

Reading:

The City were three times in the lead in this sternly contested match, and they just about deserved their narrow victory. Blore, who deputised for Church, had little chance of stopping either of Reading's goals. Brown and Clarke were a very strong rearguard and made a reliable partnership. Angus had a splendid game at centre-half. Ebdon was injured early in the game and had to go on the left wing with Riley inside. Scorers: Bowl, Bussey, and Riley for Exeter; McPhee and Dougall for Reading.
