Match 27
28th January 1939
Brighton & Hove Albion (h)

Southern League
Folkestone (a)

EXETER CITY 2
BRIGHTON AND HOVE 2.

Saturday, January 28th 1939.

There was a sensational climax to Exeter City's home match with Brighton today. A quarter of an hour from the finish Little was ordered off the field by Mr Gibbs for retaliating after he had been fouled by Stephens. Considering that Stephens was the first aggressor it seemed a harsh decision, and it was greeted by a sympathic round of cheers for Little and jeers for the referee.
Exeter City:

Brown Little
Walker Angus Fellowes

Referee:- Mr L.E.Gibbs, of Reading..
Stephens Farrell Davie Goffey Hurst
Walker Trainor Vasey

Brighton:
The City were losing by 2 goals to 1 when their ranks were so dramatically depleted, and there signs that the game would get out of hand, but the Grecians' persistent efforts saved a point just before the finish, Bowl heading the equalising goal from a free kick nicely placed by Fellowes. Davie scored both Brighton's goals and Bowl got Exeter's first following a nice dribble and pass by Ebdon.

FOLKESTONE 6
EXETER CITY RESERVES 1.

Armory and Hall (2) gave Folkestone a handsome lead by half-time in their home Southern League match against the City Reserves. Folkestone scored again in the first minute of the second half, and from then onwards the Exeter goal was under pressure. Millar broke through in the centre to score for the City, but a fifth goal for the home side was added by Appleby and a sixth by Hall.
Exeter City Reserves:- Newman; Gater, Mellish; Barnes, Bamsey, Coles; Rich, Mortimer, Pollard, Branton, and Millar.
