SOUTHEND UNITED 1
EXETER CITY 1.
Saturday, April 23rd 1938. At the Greyhound Racing Stadium, Southend.

Attendance 6,000.

Exeter City were leading by a goal until late in the second half in their last away game of the season at Southend today. Had they won it would have been no more than they deserved, for they were superior in attack in the first half and offered a stubborn defence in the second. The game was fading out with barely three minutes to go and the City were keeping Southend at bay with comparative ease. But when Bell lobbed the ball into the middle Church jumped for it too soon, leaving Hall to equalise by heading into the net. Then Oswald very nearly won the game, but his fierce drive was a trifle wide. Ebdon had given Exeter the lead 37 minutes after the start with a header from Coulston's corner kick.
